Much of this reasoning also applies to a cold, humid climate like the maritime provinces.

I have heard (and observed) that overly thick mulch robs the soil of nitrogen in order to use it to break down (it releases the nitrogen in a few years when it has done decomposing). Would you suggest adding additional nitrogen fertilizer to mulched plants?
